Photographer John Rock

John Rock
Born in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1977, John has a BA and MA in English language and literature. He did some teaching for awhile but is now a freelance journalist. These days he lives on the beautiful Far North Coast of the State of New South Wales, Australia.

John has worked part time in photographic areas for several years, including during his University degree work. He tried the children and wedding photography route in the early days, but the pressure, especially with Wedding photography, was too intense. Now he does photography that he enjoys and tries to get someone to buy the work after the event. So, after 15 years or so, he now he sees himself as a photographic artist. These days his focus is on female nudes, surfing photography (he lives near one of the best surfing breaks in the world), landscapes and interesting people. The first 3 of these themes are represented (so far) on his website www.photosbyjohnrock.com.

John has been exhibiting internationally over the past few years, mostly via online Arts networks. His work has been accepted for the Chaves International Digital Image Festival the last 2 years and each time the popular vote place his photos in the top 20%.

Although trained in dark room procedures, John has moved completely to digital imaging. Although he has developed skills in Photoshop he prefers to do most of his image construction at the moment he looks through the camera lens. Later, he tries to optimize his original vision using computer software. He uses Photoshop for basic post production that allows easier removal of blemishes and easier printing. His earlier nudes were photographed on 35mm film, then scanned at 4000 dpi. These days he uses a Sigma SD10 for his original photos. The high resolution possible allows for huge enlargements. His photos are printed on Professional photographic paper by a Pro lab using a projection process. This is hardly different at all from the old way using an enlarger in the darkroom. It has the advantage of using modern photographic printing papers that have great longevity.

John's pictures can be ordered directly through him. There are 2 default sizes of prints: Standard; 20" x 16": Large; 32" x 20". Images are all unframed. They are professionally printed on Kodak or Agfa photographic papers, so they have the extended longevity of old time photographic prints. Prints are shipped in well padded cylindrical containers unless other arrangements are made. Contact John Rock for more information.
