Morey
Craig Morey was
born in 1952 and raised in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He attended Indiana
University and studied with noted Bauhaus artist Henry Holmes Smith. In
1974 he moved to San Francisco where within two years he co-founded the
gallery San Francisco Camerawork and started to work on and exhibit
abstract and whimsical nudes. This breathtaking body of work was well
received and caught the attention of editors, art directors, and the
general public throughout the world. It also garnered several awards,
including a Special Jury Prize at the International Triennial of
Photography in Friebourg, Switzerland, and First Prize at the California
State Exposition. In 1981 Craig Morey was named one of 5 World Wide
Discoveries by the editors of Time-Life.
After leaving San Francisco Camerawork in 1981 Craig pursued freelance
photography. His clients included such standouts as Architectural Digest,
Newsweek, Parenting, Apple, The Gap, Avon, and many others. In 1988, he
worked on assignment for Penthouse International, shooting nightclub
dancers and strippers. This beautiful series of classic black & white
nudes appeared as a regular feature in Penthouse and resulted in his first
book, Studio Nudes, published in 1992.
Craig has gone on to publish several critically acclaimed books; Body/Expression/Silence,
LINEA, and 20th Century Nudes and has also developed an
outstanding website where he showcases both his classic work as well as
his new material, which is constantly be produced and generating lots of
excitement. His new series Thailand Nudes for example, is a
recently created body of work that is absolutely amazing and is generating
lots of excitement - and the best part is that it's a work in progress, so
we can expect lots more from this artist who has already given us so much.
