Garaiz
Mexican
photographer Jorge Garaiz was born in 1974. He recalls always having a
special taste for photography. His parents used to collect the Life best
picture books, and remembers spending hours gazing at all of those
wonderful images, traveling to other places in his young mind and admiring
the courage of war correspondents and photojournalists traveling to dangerous
places He also remembers art books, which he would leaf through looking
for nudes. These experiences helped him to develop an early and lifelong
fascination for the beauty of the female body.
Ironically, Jorge never thought of himself as either a photographer or an
artist, so when going off to college he chose Geophysics as his course of
study. But while in school he joined the university photography club ...
and was transformed. Photography, he discovered, was the missing element
in his life and it gave him not only a great sense of satisfaction but
also a sense of purpose. He decided to become a professional photographer
and went to work as an assistant for several advertising professionals.
But today, he works for himself. He plans to focus on shooting nudes for
much of his personal work and says he likes the work of Robert
Mapplethrope, Helmut Newton, and Edward Weston.
