       During
the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, I watched the sun set through the grid-work
pattern of an abandoned condo construction on the Florida gulf coast. I
attempted to pen my thoughts and feelings. Words failed. I was a societal
dropout with no apparent hope for obtaining the tools or the skills to
make photographs. Being somewhat dramatic and full of myself at the time
(some things are slow to change …), I asked myself the question,
"What would I do if I had six months left to live?" "Learn
to make photographs", was my answer. Without my knowledge, the
passion for photography invaded me like benevolent bacteria.

I have never encountered technical failures, only challenges. My goal as a
commercial craftsman is to supply my clients with at least forty
non-redundant photographs during a four to six hour session. My goal as an
artist is to create a series of photographs that are unlike each other and
unlike any images I have seen elsewhere. Currently, I have just over a
hundred images at my website, egcoyle.com,
but I believe they are the best of my body of work to date. They are the
only images I am willing to spend any of the remaining hours of my life
      reproducing for posterity.
