Richard
Williams
Born in Birmingham, England
Richard Williams has spent most of his working life in England and France
as a commercial photographer, building up a successful partnership with
advertising and PR firms. For ten years the Diva Photography Project has
been Richard's antidote to the pressure of producing commercial images and
concepts. It evolved initially out of his frustration with what he sees as
the "commercialization of the nude", but is now much more about
defining the nude in its context. So far there are more than 5000 images
in the project. Many have appeared in exhibitions and some have been
published.
Most of the early images were taken in the studio with his Hasselblad
6x6cm, but recent film developments have enabled daylight 35mm images to
have the same texture and quality that used to be produced only with
medium format. Most of the images shown here were taken during September
and October 2000 in a converted barn in Deven, England. Natural light was
used wherever possible, and a 1.5m softbox was used to augment the light
when needed.
Richard's current preferred cameras are Canon EOS 1 and 5, with 28mm F2.8,
50mm F1.4 and 85mm F1.8 lenses. Black and White film is usually Ilford
Delta 100, 400 and 3200, color film is usually Fuji Provia or MS100/1000.
The Hasselblad only comes out on special occasions.
