J. Welborn
J. Welborn got his start in photography at age 15 when his father hired him to take pictures of the machinery he shipped to rubber plants all over the world. The company needed high quality images of all the parts and the machines so they could be ordered by number and not have a language barrier. People working in the plant soon approached the young high school student to shoot their family pictures, portraits, and weddings. After college and a stint in the Air Force Welborn returned to his father's company where he designed electrical and pneumatic controls for the equipment his father manufactured, and he also resumed the photography of people and parts at the firm.
A few years later he was working in the machine design department of a Chicago packaging company. His new job allowed him to travel all over the US and Canada and he started to carry along his camera equipment on these trips, shooting mostly scenic and landscape images with his 4x5. He also approached a few small ad agencies where he asked for the jobs no one else wanted. He was soon traveling all week and shooting on the weekends.
Welborn next left Chicago to work in a mechanical packaging department in Atlanta, Georgia. Again, he was soon working with local ad agencies in his spare time. He spent five years there, and shot a lot of good looking southern girls, but eventually took a sales position with this company in Nashville, Tennessee. After two years of this he took the plunge and became a photographer full-time, and opened his own studio in Clarksville, a town just north of Nashville. After several years of doing glamour and wedding jobs he eventually came to focus exclusively on glamour, art, and nature photography. He also now has studio locations in Destin, Florida and Columbus, Ohio.
