Lindsay
Simpson
For
many years Lindsay Simpson worked as a full-time photography professional
in London, England. He was a senior technician at a well known art school
and even taught classes in color photography. He then decided to take a
few years off and "wandered about seeking direction". He
eventually started shooting again in the late eighties, focusing mostly on
landscapes. He drove taxis at night during this period, and with lots of
time to think, he gradually became interested in the nude as an artistic
pursuit. But rather then just start shooting models he first decided to
familiarize himself with the subject a little further. He got in shape and
started working as a figure model himself. He did this in parallel with
his photography work until just recently.
Lindsay works in the 35mm format using a Nikon FM2 and occasionally and
old F-model. His work is marked by low-key lighting and a minimal use of
colors. Something that may have been inspired by his early appreciation of
many of the great painters, especially the dark, moody work of Rembrandt.
He says that he is especially taken with the idea that "bodies become
like maps of a person’s life and that friendships often extract a beauty
from the subject that only becomes truly visible via great fondness;
certain idiosyncrasies become apparent, as do angles of view, that suit
and add flavor to the image. When your model begins to read your mind or
dictate the imagery by her poses you begin to wonder who is the real
artist".
