Terry
Palka
Canadian
photographer Terry Palka is afflicted with Scoliosis. When she was eight
her parents left their native Czechoslovakia for Canada hoping to secure
better treatment for their daughter. Terry is grown up now, resides in
Edmonton, Alberta, and underwent her most recent back surgery just a short
time ago. The hope is that this last operation will prevent her condition from
worsening - but it's not expected to get any better.
It goes without saying that her Scoliosis has forced major adjustments in
her life as well as her family's. Living with such a condition would tear
down many. But Terry has risen above the condition, transcended it,
cradled it. Not only has she survived its remorseless onslaught, she has
actually blossomed. She has grown into a beautiful young woman with only a
hint of frailty about her. And she has made her Scoliosis, and its
devastation to her back, the focal point of her art work.
It was only a few years ago that she started taking pictures, self-portraits
mostly. Except for two classes in black & white photography, which was
mostly related to darkroom procedures, she has never undergone any formal
training. Nonetheless, she had a vision firmly fixed and set about
creating a body work that not only documented the scars from her battle
with Scoliosis, but her physical gifts as well. Indeed, the most striking
quality to many of her images is her own graceful beauty. The scar tissue
is there as well, blatantly so in some cases, but in no way is it
overpowering. It might even be viewed as a mechanism of
vulnerability.
