Stephen
McClure
Where are you originally from
and how did you end up in Los Angeles?
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and I first came to Los Angeles
to study photography and 3d computer animation at Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena.
Did you grow up with arts education or artistic parents?
No, I didn’t. I actually discovered my interest in photography later in
life as it was never presented to me as a serious activity before I was in
college.
So, how was your interest in art first sparked?
After high school I went to college at a small liberal arts college in
Gambier, Ohio called Kenyon and as a part of my studies there I was
required to take art classes in order to become a well rounded individual.
Well, I am not sure if I really turned out well rounded in the college’s
estimation, but this is where I was first introduced to photography and
quickly fell in love with the medium and making images.
What led you to go from Kenyon to Art Center College of Design?
Most students at Kenyon take their junior year abroad as being in the
middle of nowhere in Ohio for four years gets a bit tedious. Instead of
going abroad I decided to go to The School of The Art Institute of Chicago
to pursue my newly discovered love of photography and I actually never
went back to Ohio. After graduating with a major in photography from SAIC
I became interested in computer animation and continued some post graduate
studies in Chicago. I then went back to Atlanta and worked in the field of
design and photography for a short while before I decided to continue my
education in photography and animation at Art Center College of Design in
Pasadena.
What artists influence your work?
There are so many it’s hard to name them all, but I would say that a
major influence in my work comes from surrealists, fashion, and fetish
photographers like Gilles Berquet, Pierre Molinier, Man Ray, Helmut
Newton, Mario Sorrenti, and Erwin Olaf.
You are a computer animator as well, which medium do you prefer?
Animation and photography are so very different it’s hard to say that I
prefer one over the other, it just depends upon what message I am trying
to convey and what medium I think is most appropriate to carry that
message.
What hardware and equipment do you use?
I use a PC at home and a Power Mac at my studio. All my shooting is
done digitally with a Canon EOS 1DS and all my lighting is done with
Elinchrom flash equipment.
Which of your own pieces do you like the most?
I like them all for different reasons so I wouldn’t say that there is
one that is my favorite, although I will say that currently the only image
of mine that I have hanging in my house is a print of Amy in the neck
brace.
