Robert
R. McCall
The
work of Robert R. McCall is a breathtaking journey into what can be
accomplished with creative composition, radical use of color, and visual
poetry. He is destined to be looked upon by future generations as one of
the early 21st century's great photographers of the nude. A self-described
Post-Christian Idealist Robert McCall grew up in the beautiful wilds of
Louisiana in what he describes as "an overzealous fundamentalist
Christian environment". One of his few sanctuaries back then was
pouring over huge stacks of photography books and magazines (especially
Life Magazine). His young psyche was thus infused with a classical sense
of composition - something he now considers his forte.
Robert eventually escaped to Michigan to pursue a music scholarship,
thinking that somehow he would be a better trombonist that a photographer.
But soon after arriving in Michigan he befriended a photographer who was
doing a lot of work shooting nudes. Such work was something that Robert
had long felt drawn to but was one that his bible-belt upbringing had
always precluded him from. Nonetheless, he soon recruited a model from an
art class and scheduled his first session with a nude subject. "When
that session was over, I had done some of the best work of my life - in
any endeavor!" he recalls. Beaming with a sense of personal
transcendence, he threw himself into his newfound pursuit. And he
continues ever onward in creating a most lustrous body of work.
