Mattathias
The
main calling for American photographer Mattathias has been in clinical
neuroscience, he is a former clinical professor of neurosurgery at Stanford
University Medical school, but he admits to toning down that career a bit
to pursue his creative interests more fully. While still living in San
Francisco he began with a well-received series of artistic nudes composed
against a backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge shot in color with 35mm, but
was encouraged by a master printer to make the experiment with B&W
in medium format. Upon moving to Virginia several years ago, Mattathias
made the switch and has compiled an ongoing body of work composed almost
entirely in the doorway of an abandoned cabin for vertical compositions
and the opening to a hayloft for horizontal framing.
Living in a university
town has been a big help in maintaining the steady stream of models he
found so available in San Francisco. Mattathias has never studied photography
formally and considers Craig Morey his sole mentor. Mattathias wants his
viewership to know that every model of his was approached in public
and had never modeled before.
Mattathias chooses to stay low-profile by not maintaining a website. He
invites interested viewers to contact him about purchasing prints on
terms intended to make them available to anyone who feels moved enough
to want one.
