Michiels
Lieven
Michiels is a young audiovisual artist in Brussels, Belgium. He has also
studied architecture as well as cinematography at the National Radio and
Film Institute, in Brussels. This experience has led to work on various
film projects. He's worked as a lighting technician, editor, and camera
assistant. And these experiences have obviously proven most beneficial, especially
in regard to lighting, for his skill in in this area is utterly
magnificent. This has come from an astute study of light and its
properties. As he says, "I believe my love for light has some strong
influences. I've studied lots of films trying to understand the psychological
story of lighting. My experience on film sets dealing with technical
issues has given me the tools to properly express myself." Lieven
goes on to say that, "The true masters for me are the master painters
like Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer. I also like the work of film
professionals Gordon Willis, who worked on The Godfather, Roger
Deakins, Darius Khondji, and photographers such as Helmut Newton, David
Hamilton, Uwe Ommer, and Roy Stuart. At school I did a workshop with James
B. Harris who produced Paths of Glory and Lolita from
Kubrick."
Photography started out as a hobby but has led him down a path where he's
been able to thoroughly study and practice both still photography as well
as motion picture photography. For his personal work he shoots with a
Canon EOS 10D and uses hot lights like those used in the film industry. And
through it all is his marvelous and artistic approach to using that
magical property of light. We expect great things to come from this young
man.
