Elisa
Lazo DeSantos
Born in
Lima, Peru, Elisa Lazo DeSantos is reportedly named after a mermaid, and
feels that this precluded her to possess a different view of the world
around her. Initially, photography was only a reference for her
illustration projects but soon began to appeal to her inherent creativity.
Having worked in the design and advertising field she is strongly drawn to
the balance of form and the strength of color and contrast. Heavily
influenced by the pagan aspects of Catholic iconography, mythology, the
Art Deco and Art Nouveau aesthetic and turn of the century horror fiction
her work reflects dark sensuality and luxury of form.
She greatly admires the work of Man Ray, her first strong
photographic influence as well as the creativity of Veronique Vial, Floria
Sigismonidi, Ansel Adams, Julie Taymor, Eiko Ishioka and Bruce Weber to
name a few.
In her erotic work Elisa tries to express the beauty of the nude form by
contrasting it with texture and fabric, wrapping it in shadow and making
us long for light. It is the pure form hidden, promising delights beyond
what we can see. Images that are dream like, exotic and alien. Her work is
featured in the book Women
by Women: Erotic Photography by Prestel as well as limited edition
art journals and various online exhibits.
