I
am a physician by trade; a radiologist. My only formal training in
photography consists of high school classes and two Santa Fe Workshops.
Like most things in life, I am primarily self-taught in photography. Being
a radiologist, I have been a student of human form and anatomy for many
years, so I suspect it was inevitable that I would gravitate to the nude
as subject matter for my art.
Though life has taken me many places and down many paths since those high
school photography courses, including time as a soldier, sailor, and
physician . . . a camera and darkroom have always been present, running in
the background. I guess I've been a photographer all of my adult
life.
Since I've been working in the darkroom for nearly 30 years, the great
majority of my work is shot on black and white film. In the studio,
Agfapan 100 processed in X-tol is my mainstay. I use it so exclusively
that I visualize shots in the studio not as my eyes see them, but as
Agfapan will record them. I process all of my work. I simply don't trust
others in the handling and care of my photography. For studio work I use
medium format from 645 to 6X9. Recently though, I've found myself
gravitating to digital photography. Since my work is entirely geared
toward exhibition and ultimately hanging on a wall, longevity issues kept
me from moving to digital. Now that digital prints last (probably) as long
as gelatin silver prints, I find myself using both. I don't see myself
abandoning the darkroom any time soon though.
My work is focused on demonstrating the beauty, strength, and mystery of
the human form. I wish I could imply greater complication and that I could
be more verbose about perhaps lofty goals; but the above describes it all.
