Michael
J. Berkowitz
Each
photograph of Michael J. Berkowitz is a treasure trove of items from his
worldly travels. Most of the props that he uses for atmosphere are items
that he's collected over his life as he's traveled to some 85 countries.
Photography is only a recent artistic development, Michael is first and
foremost a painter and sculptor. He has done more than a dozen exhibitions
of his art work across the United States this year. But his newfound
passion for photography has taken him hard and he will undoubtedly be
placing more emphasis on it.
Michael's work has a vintage air to it. This is intentional as he
considers the early French erotic photographers to be a major influence.
He also looks to the Storyville by E.J. Bellocq as a source of
inspiration. His work is as much about the art of portraiture as it is
about the nude figure. He chooses women with a non-contemporary look and
surrounds them with the props from his archive. He creates a snapshot that
is not so much meant to be erotic as it is beautiful and ultimately
timeless.
