Adam
Butler
Adam Butler was born and raised in Scotland. He studied art and art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. His photographs have found their way into hundreds of private collections throughout the world and his work has been featured in numerous magazines. His book documenting the Eolian island of Panarea was published in 1997 by Iditella Press. The Mediterranean is a powerful theme in much of his figure work and he is especially fond of combining the human nude with the spectacular scenery of that magical region. His shots are usually simple, or as he calls it, minimalist, in their design and scope. Perhaps its this lack of artifice that lends to the powerful use of form one feels gazing upon his work.
Adam was awarded the SAAC prize for photography at the Royal Scottish Academy exhibition in 1996. Apart from his work as a photographer, he co-wrote the best-selling "The Art Book" by Phaidon Press. In 1993 he established a private art gallery in London dealing in Scottish contemporary artists.
