This
book has not received near the press coverage that it deserves. At present
it's not even available at any major U.S. bookstores. This is a tragedy -
for this is one of the most outstanding photography books published in
recent times.
BodyVision is a splendid celebration of the artistic nude from an
amazing group of ten Lithuanian artists headlined by the masterful pioneer
of Lithuanian nude photography himself, Rimantas Dichavicius. Across a
landscape of 159 pages we are presented with a dizzying spectrum of
different visions: the surreal imagery of Vitaly Butyrinas, the classical
nudes of Pranas Gudaitis and Violeta Bubelyte, the mesmerizing work of
Aurelija Cepulinskaite, whose use of young girls in settings of abstract
isolation and loneliness are absolutely breathtaking, the razor sharp and
superbly composed nudes of Romualdas Pozerskis, and the striking studio
work of Gintaras Balionis.
Four photographers devote their attention to couples: Aleksandras
Macijauskas is genius in his beautiful study of Eros among the aged, Rolas
Simulis focuses upon erotic photography (his images provoked a backlash of
disapproval in his country), the symbolic work of Gintaras Balionis, and
the apocalyptic work of Virgilis Sonta, who was mysteriously murdered
during the time of liberation from the Soviets.
The introduction to the history of nude photography in Lithuania and the
unbelievable work of Rimantas Dichavicius alone would make this book a
worthwhile investment, but taken as a whole, this is one of the most
exciting publications to come out in recent memory. Get it no matter where
you have to go.
