A
living legend, Boris Vallejo is one of the most famous artists of all
time. He is renown throughout the world for his fantasy illustrations,
much of it appearing in his own series of very successful books including Mirage,
Dreams,
and Titans.
The characters in his work all possess a grace and muscularity that is
uniquely his own and portrays women equally as valiant and strong as his
male characters. Indeed, an argument could be made that he has played a
major role in the rise of women's self-esteem as far as it pertains to
strength and athleticism. His work has long showcased that sensual,
feminine beauty can coexist with these qualities and he did this, mind
you, long before it became fashionable.
Vallejo has in recent years taken to shooting photos of his models himself
rather than relying on professional photographers. He uses these pictures
in creating his magnificent illustrations. As astute craftsman, he started
off by buying a medium format Hasselblad
which is as he calls it, "the Rolls Royce" of cameras, and
totally immersed himself into his new medium. Bodies
is the result of these efforts and it is a fabulous collection of nude
photographs. Vallejo is truly gifted with incredible vision and artistic
skill. And the women are AMAZING as Marc Ruby writes at Amazon.com,
"Vallejo's women are not the slim ephemeral beauties that inhabit the
fantasies of your average, slightly flabby, American male. These women are
people to contend with, who handle swords and armor with the same facility
we do Palm Pilots. Using these strong yet remarkably sensual women (and
men too) Vallejo creates images of refined quality with a startling sense
of natural form and flow". In our opinion, this book is a must have
for fans and collectors of photographs that truly glorify the human body.
